A matrimony site is a trust business first
Families don't sign up to a matrimony website because it looks good. They sign up because they trust it: trust that profiles are real, that a daughter's phone number won't end up in strangers' hands, and that the horoscope matching follows the way their family has always done it.
When we built Vijayalakshmi Matrimony, a members-only Tamil matrimony platform, every feature decision came back to that one word. Here's how we approached it, and what any community or regional matrimony service should expect from its website.
1. Profiles that families actually fill in
A long, confusing registration form is where most matrimony sites lose people. We split it into short steps: basic details, family, education and career, partner preferences, then horoscope. Members can save and come back later.
Things Tamil families look for and that the profile must capture properly:
- Community, sub-sect and gothram (where relevant)
- Native place and current location
- Education, occupation and income range
- Family details: parents, siblings, family type and values
- Partner preferences that drive search and match suggestions
2. Automatic jathagam from birth details
Asking every member to scan and upload a horoscope creates blurry images and inconsistent data. Instead, the platform generates the jathagam automatically from date, time and place of birth: rasi, nakshatram, lagnam and the chart.
That one change makes the next feature possible.
3. Porutham matching built in
Because every profile has structured horoscope data, the system can run the classical porutham checks between two members and show the result right on the profile. Families see compatibility before they send an interest, not after a week of phone calls.
For a Tamil matrimony platform, porutham isn't a nice-to-have feature. It's often the first filter a family applies, so it has to be right there in the search results.
4. Privacy-first contact sharing
This is the feature that makes families comfortable joining:
- Phone numbers and contact details stay hidden until both sides accept an interest
- Photo visibility controls, so photos can be shown only to logged-in or approved members
- Admin verification before a profile goes live
- Block and report, so members can stop unwanted contact instantly
5. Search that matches how people think
Members search the way they'd describe a match to a relative: community, age range, location, education, star. We build search and filters around those fields and save partner preferences, so the site can suggest matches without the member searching every day.
6. Memberships that pay for the platform
Most matrimony services run on paid plans. We set up free and premium tiers, online payments, and limits such as how many contacts a free member can view. Owners get an admin dashboard to approve profiles, manage plans and see sign-ups and revenue.
What it costs and how long it takes
A matrimony platform is a web application, not a brochure site. With profiles, search, jathagam, porutham, privacy controls and memberships, expect 6 to 10 weeks of build time. Custom platforms of this kind typically start from ₹1,50,000, and we give a fixed quote after a scoping session.
